Should You Have an Engagement Party?

In some circles an engagement party is a traditional event held in celebration of or to announce an engagement. Though it may be a tradition for many, it’s not an obligation. If you’re toying with the idea of an engagement party, here are some things to consider.

Why do you want to have an engagement party?

There are several reasons couples have engagement parties:

  • To surprise their guests with an announcement.
  • To celebrate their good news.
  • To get more gifts.

Hopefully you’re considering an engagement party as a celebration of good news. If you do decide to throw an event, it will take some planning. Make sure you want to plan both an engagement party and a wedding.

Can you afford an engagement party?

If you’re paying for your wedding, is an engagement party in your budget? Remember, you don’t have to have an elegant, catered affair. If you have a barbecue budget, there’s no shame in having an outdoor engagement party. Go with what your budget will allow. Your guests will be happy fr you no matter what you decide.

How will your guests feel about attending your engagement party?

Here’s the thing…your guests will have to attend an engagement party, a shower, a bachelor party, perhaps a bachelorette party and a wedding. That’s at least three gifts. Guests aren’t always able to afford so many gifts plus new clothes for each event, and may not be able to attend every party. Do consider your guests before throwing another party.

Do you really want to plan another event?

Are you up for planning a wedding AND engagement party? Some people love to plan party after party, while others are exhausted after one event. If you’re up to the task, by all means plan for lots of festivities.
